Berkeley's Table

This project was designed around a peice of wood taken from one of the historic tree in Berkeley square. The tree was felled in 2006 due to fungal brackets causing rot and making it a danger to the surrounding area. It is sad to see a tree of this size have to be felled but there is a silver lining in the fact that after all these years a small part of it is able to be repurposed.

With the Berkeley square Plane wood used for the table being of historic value. It was important to insure the materiality and composition of this project provide an appropriate base for this to sit on. The materiality for this base consists of Ash and Plane with the subtle tones of the Ash allowing attention to be drawn to the Plane limb and to the table top with its beautiful grain.

Sustainability within this project was an aim for the project with all the materials either being repurposed or sustainably sourced. The Plane wood was sourced from a dead limb and a tree that had to be felled due to being a danger to the public. The Ash was sourced from an ash that was felled due to the disease ash die back. The metal bar underneath the table was found in a skip in Westminster Abbey.
