Platanus Tabula

Introducing Platanus Tabula: A pair of side tables that beautifully embody the harmonious proportions and formations Found in the graceful London Plane tree of Berkeley's square.

These exquisite side tables are crafted from the wood of a London Plane tree (Platanus × acerifolia), to be precise, from a venerable Berkeley's Square Plane. This majestic tree is a cherished part of London's history, having been planted in 1789. The image above captures a momentous event in 2006 when the tree had to be felled due to a fungal infection.

From here, the timber was meticulously milled, finding its way to various destinations. However, the unused sections were soon discovered by me, allowing me to breathe new life into them by transforming a portion into these elegant tables. In doing so, I continue to narrate the story of these historic trees, preserving their legacy.

The design thoughtfully honors the historical significance of these trees by incorporating elements that pay homage to their natural elegance. The formation of the legs mirrors the graceful tapering trunks of the Berkeley's Plane tree, capturing their timeless beauty. Furthermore, the network of the legs draws inspiration from the simplicity of a tree's root system.

Remaining firmly rooted in the world of organic inspiration, we turn to the golden section, which imbues this pair with a familiar and harmonious ratio. This not only reinforces our connection to nature but also allows us to seamlessly integrate geometries found in the natural world into our design, creating a harmonious blend of artistry and history
